Video playback is one of the most optimised things a phone does — dedicated hardware decodes the stream and the screen shows mostly dark, mostly static frames. A puzzle game is the opposite: a bright screen, constant redrawing, a touch digitiser working continuously, and network chatter for events and timers. None of it is heavy on its own, and together it adds up.
The screen is most of it
Candy boards are bright white with saturated colours, which on an OLED panel is close to the worst case for power. Dropping brightness from ninety per cent to fifty is the single largest saving available and costs nothing visually in an ordinary lit room.
Uncapped rendering is second
Many of these games redraw as fast as the hardware permits even when the board is entirely still. On a 120 Hz phone that is a lot of work for no benefit whatsoever. If the game exposes a frame rate or battery option in its settings, it is the second-largest saving and usually invisible.
Charging while you play is the bad combination
Fast charging generates heat inside the phone, and so does the game. Together they push the device towards thermal limits, at which point three things happen: charging slows to protect the battery, the processor throttles so animation stutters, and the battery ages faster because heat is what actually wears lithium cells.
If you must do both, use a slower charger. A phone charging at 18 W while gaming stays far cooler than the same phone at 65 W, and for an evening on the couch the difference in charge time does not matter.
Where the cable comes in
A cable does not make a phone charge faster than its charger and battery allow, and anyone selling one on that claim is overselling. What a cable does decide is whether it survives the way it is used during gaming: plugged in, bent sharply at the connector, tugged sideways every time the phone moves on the desk.
That is a mechanical problem, and the fixes are mechanical too — a braided sleeve so the jacket does not split, a long moulded collar behind the plug so the bend radius is spread over a centimetre rather than a millimetre, and enough length that the cable is not under tension in the first place. Two metres exists so the phone can sit where you want it and the charger can stay in the wall.
What to check on any cable, including ours
- A stated wattage rating. USB-C cables differ, and an unrated one is a guess.
- A visible strain relief collar, not a bare join at the housing.
- Length that matches your setup. A cable under tension fails at the connector, every time.
- For data, check whether it is USB 2.0 or faster. Most charging cables, ours included, are USB 2.0 — fine for charging and slow for moving files.
